| Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer, accounting for more than 90% of all liver cancer cases. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a small subset of tumors with the cha-racteristics of self-renewal and infinite proliferation. Studies have shown that CSCs have a feature of high tumorigenicity, metastasis, and drug resistance, and are closely related to tumor recurrence. Liver cancer stem cells (LCSCs) are closely related to the carcinogenesis and recurrence of HCC. Macrophages are the most important cells causing chronic inflammatory reactions. Macrophages that infiltrate tumor tissues or tumor microenvironment (TME) are called tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). TAMs are the most important component of the inflammatory microenvironment of tumors, involving in various malignant behaviors of HCC cells and the immune escape. TAMs serve as a “bridge” between the inflammatory microenvironment and CSCs. Targeting TAMs to inhibit the formation of LCSCs may provide a possibility for HCC treatment. This paper reviews the characteristics of LCSCs, their main role in HCC, the subtypes and functions of TAMs, and the interrelationship between LCSCs and TAMs, also summarizes the latest research results on TAMs-related anti-HCC therapeutic targets, which could provide a new idea for the treatment of HCC. |
