Abstract:[Purpose] To describe the current global cancer burden, sex differences, regional variations, and future trends, based on the data from GLOBOCAN 2024. [Methods] The data come from the GLOBOCAN 2024 database published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. We analyzed the incidence and mortality rates of major cancers worldwide in 2024, and used predicted data for 2050 to forecast future trends. [Results] In 2024, there were 20.636 million new cancer cases and 9.763 million cancer-related deaths worldwide. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) stood at 194.9/105 and 87.8/105 population, respectively. Lung cancer remained the cancer with the heaviest global incidence and mortality burden, accounting for 12.8% of all new cancer cases and 19.1% of all cancer deaths. Overall cancer burden was higher in men than that in women. Lung cancer, prostate cancer and colo-rectal cancer were the major contributors to cancer incidence among men. For women, breast cancer, lung cancer and colorectal cancer were the main contributors to both incidence and mortality burden. Substantial regional disparities in cancer burden were observed. Developed regions including Europe, the Americas and Oceania generally presented high cancer incidence levels. By contrast, regions in Africa and parts of Asia had relatively low incidence levels yet still bore a heavy mortality burden. The global cancer burden is projected to increase further by 2050, with new cases rising to 34.395 million and cancer-related deaths reaching 17.492 million. [Conclusion] In 2024, the global cancer burden was severe. Till 2050, the number of cases and deaths due to cancer will continue to increase. Lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, and stomach cancer remain the priorities for global cancer prevention and control. It is necessary to implement and promote cancer prevention and control measures more effectively, taking into account the characteristics of different regions and populations.
