[Purpose]To estimate the incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer in Henan Province in 2020 and the trend of changes from 2010 to 2020. [Methods]Based on quality-standard-compliant data reported by various cancer registries in Henan Province, crude incidence and mortality rates, as well as age-standardized incidence and mortality rates for esophageal cancer in 2020 were calculated, stratified by gender and urban-rural residence. Joinpoint software was used to calculate the annual percent change (APC) and average annual percent change (AAPC) to analyze trends in esophageal cancer incidence and mortality from 2010 to 2020. [Results]It is estimated that in 2020, there were 26,700 new cases of esophageal cancer in Henan Province, with a crude incidence rate of 24.38/105 population, an age-standardized incidence rate by Chinese standard population (ASRC) of 17.5/105, and an age-standardized incidence rate by world standard population (ASRW) of 17.6/105.The estimated number of esophageal cancer deaths in Henan Province for 2020 was 20,988, with a crude mortality rate of 19.16/105 population. The age-standardized mortality rate by Chinese standard population (ASMRC) was 13.14/105, and the age-standardized mortality rate by world standard population (ASMRW) was 13.08/105. The ASRC incidence rate in rural areas was 1.79 times that of urban areas, while the mortality rate was 1.68 times higher. The ASRC incidence rate for males was 1.81 times that of females, and the mortality rate was 2.01 times higher. Both age-specific incidence and mortality rates began to rise rapidly from age 40, reaching peak values in the 80-84 age group and 85+ age group, respectively. From 2010 to 2020, the ASRC incidence and mortality rates of esophageal cancer in cancer registration areas of Henan Province showed a significant downward trend overall (with AAPC of -5.70% and -4.73%, respectively, both P<0.05). [Conclusion]The disease burden of esophageal cancer in Henan Province is relatively severe, showing gender and urban-rural disparities. Over the past decade, the incidence and mortality rates in Henan Province have shown a significant downward trend, but they still remain higher than the national average. Future efforts should focus on strengthening the implementation of primary and secondary prevention strategies to reduce the health burden caused by esophageal cancer. |
